Kigali To Akagera By Car- Route, Gate Times & Tips

4x4 car rental Rwanda in a safari land cruiser

Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and the easiest safari to reach from Kigali. It lies in the east, near the Tanzanian border, and is home to lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, rhinos and buffalo. You can drive there in a couple of hours, spend a full day on game drives and boat trips, and be back in the capital that evening, though an overnight stay is more relaxed. This guide covers the route, drive time, gate hours, a day trip plan and what vehicle to choose.

Quick answer: Akagera is about 110 km east of Kigali. The drive to the southern entrance takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, though some travellers allow up to 3 hours. The park is open daily from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, so leave Kigali before 5 am for a full-day game drive.

The Route from Kigali to the Akagera South Gate

  1. Leave Kigali heading east on the main highway towards Rwamagana. Aim to be out of the city before the morning traffic builds.
  2. Rwamagana: a busy town with fuel stations, shops and cafés. A good place for a quick stop.
  3. Kayonza / Kabarondo junction: the highway splits here. Follow the signs for Akagera and the south gate.
  4. Akagera south gate: register, pay your entry fee, and meet your guide if you have booked one.

The drive is straightforward and scenic, with rolling hills, banana plantations and small villages. Use offline maps, as phone signal can drop in rural areas. See our guide to navigation apps for driving in Rwanda.

Akagera Gate Times and Park Rules

driving from kigali to akagera
At Akagera national park with Tom & Kati
  • Opening hours: 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Only guests who have booked the park’s night game drive stay in the park after 6 pm.
  • Night drives: the park runs them in the evening, from about 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
  • Entry gate: you must enter through the south gate near Kayonza.
  • Exit: you can leave through the south gate, or through the north gate if your trip ends there. The north exit is roughly 4 hours’ drive back to Kigali, so plan this carefully.
  • Fees: the park is run by African Parks with the Rwanda Development Board, and entry covers self-drive game viewing, charged per person per day. Prices change, so check the latest fees before you travel.
  • Guides: you don’t have to hire one, but it helps. Recent park pricing lists about US$25 for a half day and US$40 for a full day, with the half-day rate applying when a guide is collected before 9 am and returned within 5 hours.

Always carry your passport and booking confirmation.

One-Day Akagera Trip from Kigali: Sample Plan

4:30 to 5:00 am: leave Kigali by car with a packed breakfast.
7:00 am: reach the south gate, register and pay entry fees. Collect your guide if you booked one.
7:15 to 11:30 am: morning game drive through the south and central park. Look for elephants, zebras, giraffes, topi, impala and buffalo.
12:00 pm: lunch at a lodge or a picnic spot in the park.
1:30 to 3:30 pm: boat trip on Lake Ihema to see hippos, crocodiles and water birds. A popular combination is pairing a game drive with a boat safari on Lake Ihema.
3:30 to 5:30 pm: afternoon game drive and return towards the gate before closing.
6:00 pm: exit the park and drive back to Kigali, arriving around 8:30 to 9:00 pm.

Reality check: a day trip means about 5 hours of driving plus a full day in the park, so it’s tiring. If you can, sleep in the park or nearby, start early and return the next day.

One Night in Akagera: A Better Option

An overnight trip lets you see the park at dawn, when animals are most active, and avoids a late return.

  • Day 1: leave Kigali mid-morning, reach the park around lunchtime, take an afternoon game drive or boat trip, and sleep at a lodge or camp.
  • Day 2: early morning game drive, breakfast, then drive back to Kigali.

Staying in the park also helps with the early start. Game drives should begin before the 6 am opening time, so being close to the south gate saves time. Check our 2 days Akagera safari or the Akagera National Park page.

Self Drive or Hire a Driver for Akagera?

Self drive is allowed and popular with confident drivers. The entry fee includes self-drive game viewing, and you can add a guide if you want.

Self drive works well if you:

  • Have experience driving 4x4s on dirt tracks
  • Want to stop for photos wherever you like
  • Are happy to follow park maps and signs
  • Are travelling with friends or family and want to share the cost

A driver-guide is better if you:

  • Have never driven on safari tracks
  • Want help spotting animals and learning about them
  • Prefer to focus on photography and the views
  • Are doing a long day trip and don’t want to drive 5 hours yourself
  • Want someone else to handle breakdowns, parking and navigation

Many visitors choose a driver or at least a park guide, because knowing where lions or elephants were seen that morning makes a big difference. See hire a driver in Rwanda.

Which Vehicle Should You Choose?

TripSuggested vehicle
Couple on a day tripLand Cruiser Prado
Photography and game viewingSafari Land Cruiser with pop-up roof
Family or small groupSafari Van with pop-up roof
Budget self drive on dry daysRAV4, with caution on rough tracks
Large group or retreatMinibus

Park roads are dirt tracks and are not always smooth, so high ground clearance helps. In the rainy seasons, a 4×4 is the safer choice. See our guide to the best time to hire a car in Rwanda.

What You Can See in Akagera

  • Game drives: elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, topi, impala and lions. Akagera is again a Big Five park, including lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and rhino, though leopards and rhinos are harder to see.
  • Boat trips on Lake Ihema: hippos, crocodiles and birdlife.
  • Rhino tracking: this takes place only in the north of the park, and it is more than four hours’ drive from the south, so it suits overnight or longer trips.
  • Night drives: a chance to see nocturnal animals.
  • Birdwatching: more than 400 bird species recorded.

Practical Tips for a Day Trip

  • Leave early: the best wildlife viewing is in the first hours after opening.
  • Fill your tank in Kayonza or Rwamagana before the park.
  • Carry cash and a card for fees, lunch and tips, but don’t rely on signal for payments.
  • Pack water, snacks and sunscreen, plus binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • Wear neutral colours such as khaki, olive or brown.
  • Keep windows and roof closed or supervised when near animals, and never step out of the vehicle outside designated areas.
  • Follow the park’s speed limit and stay on marked tracks.
  • Respect wildlife: don’t feed, shout at or crowd animals.
  • Plan your return so you are out of the gate before 6 pm.
  • Check the weather. After heavy rain, some tracks can be muddy.

Costs to Plan For

  • Car hire: daily rate for your vehicle, with or without a driver. See our car rental rates.
  • Fuel: about 220 km round trip plus park driving.
  • Park entry: per person per day, set by the park.
  • Guide: if you choose a park guide.
  • Activities: boat trip, night drive or rhino tracking.
  • Food and lodging: lodge, camp or hotel if you stay overnight.
